FutureCaptain — holding entries, practised on the instruments.

An IFR trainer for student pilots: read the needles, picture the fix, choose the entry, then fly it on a glass PFD or a six-pack with the timer running and the wind blowing. Alongside it, training for airline, Defensie and aptitude selection.

Why it exists

Holding entries are taught as a mnemonic. The geometry is what holds up.

Most students learn the three entries as recipes with a memory aid to tell them apart. That works until the hold turns left, or the heading sits close to a sector boundary — and then there is nothing underneath it.

The FutureCaptain trainer teaches the geometry instead. It generates holds the student has not seen before, in their real orientation to north, and grades the answer against ICAO Doc 8168, including the 5° zone of flexibility at each sector boundary. Then it makes them fly it.

For Atya it sits next to the flight instruction: ground practice for a skill that is expensive to learn only in the air. The same platform prepares candidates for pilot and aptitude selection, with exercises generated per session and every wrong answer explained.

IFR trainer

From picture to procedure.

  • Glass PFD or six-pack

Generic replicas of a glass PFD and a round-dial panel with two VOR heads and a GPS. Every knob works with a trackpad, mouse wheel or keyboard.

  • Graded against ICAO Doc 8168

Entries are assessed on the published sector rules, including left-turn holds and the tolerance at each boundary.

  • Three ways to practise

A frozen snapshot to pick the entry, a live entry with the aircraft still flying toward the fix, and a full hold flown against the ideal track.

  • A ladder, not a quiz

Levels follow the EASA exercise order for radio navigation, from reading the CDI to a full hold in wind from a blank panel. Aids fade as you improve.

  • Free, without an account

The holding trainer is open to anyone. Progress is kept in the browser.

Selection training

Preparation for the tests candidates actually sit.

  • Selection tracks

Airline pilot (ab initio), Defensie capability and pilot selection, capacity assessments and technical selection.

  • Generated practice

Exercises are created per session, so progress reflects skill rather than a memorised answer bank.

  • Explained mistakes

Every wrong answer comes with an explanation of the reasoning, not just the correct option.

  • Training plans

Structured plans of four to eight weeks, so preparation has a shape and a finish date. Free to start.
